Intensive Malay Language Programme (KIBM)
(Beginners Level - Term Break)


Malay language for Beginners is part of a Modern Foreign Language programme that is offered for International young adult learners who are pursuing Southeast Asian and Regional studies or Malay as a foreign language at their respective Higher learning institutions. International students who wish to spend their term break travelling to Malaysia, can put their learning into practice while experiencing their stay In Malaysia. This intensive Malay Language Proficiency course is formulated to train international participants to become proficient in using Malay language in a variety of contexts skilfully.

Course Objectives

  • Converse with confidence using simple language acquisition.
  • Read and understand short stories, narratives and simple texts.
  • Understand basic communication of the Malay Language.
  • Understand information delivered in the Malay Language and in turn provide .
  • appropriate responses and feed back.
  • Write short sentences in simple language using specific words.
  • Interact with peers regarding daily matters and work.
  • Listen to audio, conversation and presentation, and deliver appropriate responses verbally or in writing.

Course Content

Participants will be exposed to Malay language acquisition which comprises Malay syllables, phrases and simple structures, vocabulary, cultural expressions, numbers, time markers, easy grammar, listening to audio, reading simple text and stories, understanding the meaning of words, responding to questions, writing short sentences, and simple paragraphs.

Who should Attend

International students studying Southeast Asian and Regional studies and Modern Foreign language courses in Malay.


120 hours equivalent to 3 credits.

4 weeks (Monday to Friday) – from 9 am until 2 pm.

Training Methodology

Discussions, role plays, practice sessions, Interactive and integrated learning, presentations, simulations, etc.

International students too will be involved in educational and social visits that are organised within the surroundings of Kuala Lumpur. The visits include Dark Cave / Batu Caves, Museum Orang Asli, Royal Selangor, Kraf Negara, FRIM /Kuala Selangor, Movie, cultural events, pasar malam etc.

Assessment Methods

  • Continuous Assessment: 60% (Exercises, Interactive activity and Tests and Educational visits).
  • Final Examination: 40% (Listening + Speaking + Reading + Writing).

Awarding of Certificate

The certificate will be awarded by University of Malaya Centre for Continuing Education upon successful completion of the course.
